February 26th, 2023  Ralph Gibson By: Connor Albaugh               We have had the opportunity to examine quite a few incredible photographers with exemplary work over the past couple of months. Not only is there work popular, but their compositions are of the highest quality in the field of photography. We shift our focus to another talent in the field of photography, one who challenges the thoughts of his viewers artistically and cognitively. His name is Ralph Gibson .                In 1939, an American photographer by the name of Ralph Gibson was “born in Hollywood, California” (Article #2). “His father was an assistant director to Alfred Hitchcock” (Article #2). He was an English filmmaker and this allowed young Ralph to see his dad at work making films. Visiting  his dad allowed him to see all of the things he did as a filmmaker. “He was impressed by the power of the camera lens an...

Michael Kenna

February 21st, 2023  Michael Kenna By: Connor Albaugh             It has been a good amount of time since the last blog. I had the opportunity to process my first roll of film and mess around with the process with making photograms. Processing film took a long time, but being gentle and patient is done with the intention of seeing your negatives in the greatest capacity. For photograms, finding the right lighting as well as the correct items to use to articulate each of the pictures was the hardest part. I used a lot of paper in the process, but continual practice allowed me to gain good experience with this technique and learn about something that I hadn’t been familiar with. With this being said, we shift our focus to a very decorated photographer who uses a fascinating technique to capture wonderful compositions. His name is Michael Kenna .               In “Widnes, England in 1953,” a photograp...

Lee Friedlander

February 1st, 2023  Lee Friedlander By: Connor Albaugh             “I always wanted to be a photographer. I was fascinated with the materials. But I never dreamed I would have this much fun. I imagined something much less elusive, much more mundane” (Article 2). This was said by Lee Friedlander in 1989, and I couldn’t agree more. There was a time in my life that photographer began to become a hobby and something that I genuinely enjoyed. It didn’t take much before I became addicted. I would spend long hours photographing while learning as much as I could to improve my craft. The hard work and dedication certainly allowed me to not only gain a better understanding of photography, but allowed me to see the world differently. Everything about photography excited me and I couldn’t put down the camera. This was the same for Lee Friedlander as he had the luxury of creating incredible work.              ...

Man Ray

January 30, 2023  Man Ray  By: Connor Albaugh             The field of photography allows for so much diversity for artists as well as for the work they create. With diversity, there are differences and variety—two things that make photography as entertaining and exciting as a medium. Everyone has their own individual taste and not only does this maximize creativity, but encourages those in this field to try new things and branch out beyond their normal comfort zone. Practice makes perfect, and curiosity creates opportunities. A rather unique photographer, this person not only attracts his viewers visually, but produces very good pieces of work. He is known as Man Ray and it is important to review what he has been able to do in the field of photography.                Originally born as Emmanuel Radnitzky, “Man Ray was born in 1890 to a Russian-Jewish immigrant family in Philadelphia” (A...
