Touching on “Art as a function” and “Art as Persuasion” and relating it back to photography and other beautiful forms of art was quite fascinating because there are more things to consider on behalf of art I hadn’t taken into consideration. With a lot to unravel, there were three sentences that really stood out to me throughout this reading that I wanted to discuss and analyze. Self Portrait

November 16th, 2022 Self Portrait By: Connor Albaugh Blog requirement: Take a self portrait and comment on it.          When I was brainstorming ideas on behalf of the self portrait I would take, I didn’t have many. There are a lot of things that embody my self image and fitting them all in one would be quite cumbersome and difficult in a self portrait. However, as I walked into my room after lifting, I looked around my room for some inspiration concerning an accurate self portrait that would represent me well as a person. Then, I looked at the various flags on the wall and that gave me a great idea. I have 5 flags/banners that hang on my wall, but two were very perfect for taking a self portrait and represent my personality and morals quite well. I decided to take my self portrait in the middle of my room in between the flags that say “No one cares, work harder” and “Academic Weapon” as they proved to be vital in this self portrait I chose.  ...

China. 2005.  © Patrick Zachmann | Magnum Photos Requirement :  go on https://www.magnumphotos.com/, research a photographer that appeals to you, find one photograph, and comment on it in 3-4 paragraphs.          It feels like it has been ages since the last blog post. Having written a paper on a photobook and a summary reflection on a body of text, this gave me the opportunity to “warm up my hands” so to say for this blog. This blog is a rather interesting one, mainly because we have the freedom to choose any photographer we deemed to be “appealing” in a sense. On behalf of my own photography, I really like to include color into my work as well as photograph during the night hours. This was an emphasis while I searched through countless numbers of photographers on the magnum website, and I happened to come across one that I really liked. The phot...

Color Photography

Image
September 28th, 2022 Color Photography By: Connor Albaugh Requirements of the following blog: take a photograph in which color is a dominant narrative and explain why you took the photograph .               Color within photography is incredibly important, both visually and mentally. In the majority of images one sees on a daily basis, there exists at least one or more colors that dominant or tell the majority of the story. Not only does color tell a story, but it has the ability to bring out the beauty of certain elements in image. It can bring attention to details and aspects of an image that are small or large as well as has an emotional side which allows someone to feel a certain way in regards to what they are viewing in a photograph. On behalf of my inspiration for this assignment, it was hard to find something with a dominant color as well as something that would be visually captivating. Yesterday, my friend and I went to Chipotl...

Commenting on Richard Avedon's Quote

September 21st, 2022 Richard Avedon Quote Comments   By: Connor Albaugh Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and John F. Kennedy, January 3, 1961 *Comment on Richard Avedon's quote and choose an image from the internet to illustrate your writing.  *Quote: " The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph, it is no longer a fact but an opinion. There is no such thing as inaccuracy in a photograph. All photographs are accurate. None of them is true. "           When reading this quote by Richard Avedon, I was rather intrigued. I read it several times and yet, I was still was at a loss for words as to how I would actively respond to such a quote from one of the greats in portrait photography. A quote of such detail should be unpacked in small increments which allows a reader to comprehend the main idea as well as form some sort of self definition in regards to the quote. Not only is this quote fascinating, but it expresses...

Surrealism

September 18th, 2022 The Beauty of Surrealism  By: Connor Albaugh          It has been quite a while since I worked with photography in terms of mapping out and creating a visually entertaining and captivating image. The topic of this blog really challenged me to think outside of the box and made me think hard about what I could do to create a good photograph. My thoughts, and eventually the photos I took to create an image were all taken in the interest of surrealism . Surrealism is quite a fascinating branch of photography as well as a way of being able to express meanings of things in a unique way. The definition for surrealism is as follows: " Surrealism aims to revolutionize human experience. It balances a rational vision of life with one that asserts the power of the unconscious and dreams. The movement's artists find magic and strange beauty in the unexpected and the uncanny, the disregarded and the unconventional " (Article #1). As I read thi...

9/11 Photographer Thomas Hoepker

September 11th, 2022 Commenting on a 9/11 quote by Thomas Hoepker By: Connor Albaugh Comment on the following 9/11 quote by Magnum photographer Thomas Hoepker : "I strongly believe in documentary photography, in taking pictures of real life. When I looked at the pictures from our photographers, there were some that were wonderful or clever compositions, but they emphasized the artistry in photography rather than telling the story. We didn’t put those pictures in this book. I don’t think they belong in this book because they do not serve its purpose, which is to bear witness. In a moment like this you must be very humble. When something like this happens, nothing you do can adequately respond to the monstrosity of the event."          Before I begin my blog, I would like to take the opportunity to honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Today marks the 21st anniversary of one of the largest terrorist attacks orchestrated by Osama Bin Laden a...
